Moms, it's time to talk to your daughters — about technology

Moms, it's time to talk to your high school and middle school-aged daughters about a matter of national interest — careers in technology. When the baby boomer generation retires, there may not be enough people ready to fill all the highly skilled, high paying technology job openings in the United States. Young women need to know now about the opportunities.
To start the discussion, the Centers of Excellence in manufacturing at three local colleges are sponsoring a Mother-Daughter Technology, Engineering and Aptitude event, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Sat., Feb. 7 at the Edmonds Conference Center, 201 Fourth Ave. N, Edmonds.
The free event, open to all middle school and high school girls and their moms, includes lunch. The mother-daughter technology day will include hands-on activities led by professional engineer, Celeste Baine.
“We want to dispel some of the myths about what advanced manufacturing really is and highlight the many career and training opportunities,” said Mary Kaye Bredeson, executive director of the Materials and Process Development Center of Excellence located at Edmonds and Everett community colleges.
Career opportunities for technicians, engineers, designers, fabricators, and other technical professions and trades are abundant, and more women are needed to fill these jobs and strengthen the nation’s economy.
“It is important that we inform youth and their parents about careers and training opportunities in advanced manufacturing and related industries,” said Ann Avary, executive director of the Marine Manufacturing & Technology Center of Excellence, at Skagit Valley College, Whidbey Island Campus
Teachers bringing students to the event may earn clock hours.
