Women’s Symposium to celebrate “100 years of triumph”

Poet Laureate Mona Lake Jones is the featured speaker at the Women's Symposium.

Edmonds College holds its fifth Women’s Symposium Sat., March 13 in Triton Union Building 202 at Edmonds College, 20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood. Author, educator, and poet laureate Dr. Mona Lake Jones is the featured speaker for the event. She will address participants on the theme of this year’s event, “Women: 100 Years of Triumph.” Doors open at 8:30 a.m.

Lake Jones is the author of the poetry and prose collections Unleashing the Power of a Sister and the Color of Culture series as well as a spoken word collection on CD, Poetry Dancing on Music. She is the King County Poet Laureate and served as the Seattle Poet Laureate for five years. She received the Langston Hughes Award for her literary contributions and the Blackbird Literary Award, which honors a published author for her works and contributions to the community.

“It’s important to recognize all the contributions women have made in this century and we’re looking forward to having Dr. Lake Jones at our event to make the point with eloquence and style,” said Shirley Sutton, Executive Director of Diversity Affairs at Edmonds College. “It should be noted that this is good information for men too. We’ve had a number of men attend past events. Everyone’s welcome!”

The Women’s Symposium will also include a living history lecture by actress and historian Tames Alan entitled “Suffragettes in Petticoats,” a women’s resource fair, a “Fashion Through the Ages” show, and a panel on “The Changing Roles of Women: Reflecting the Past: Realizing the Future.”

The evening before the symposium, the community is invited to meet Seattle artist Mary Ann Peters at the Heart and Grace reception, 5-7:30 p.m., Fri., March 12 in the college library. Celebrate Women’s History Month and the fifth annual Women’s Symposium with an evening of art, music, and culinary delights. Free. Open to all.
