Edmonds CC shares math across the curriculum expertise

03/12/2010

Math instructor Deann Leoni and Director of Grants Rebecca Hartzler co-authored "Math Across the Community College Curriculum: A Successful Path to Quantitative Literacy," and "Recipe for Faculty Development" in the February issue, Vol. 1, No. 2 of MathAMATYC Educator, The Journal of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges.

Biology instructor Jenny McFarland contributed "Teaching and Assessing Graphing Using Active Learning" about curriculum she uses in her classes developed in part by participation in math across the curriculum institutes.

In their articles, Leoni and Hartzler provide a brief history of the Math Across the Curriculum (MAC) project that began in 1999 at Edmonds College to support the quantitative skills college-wide ability. A grant from the National Science Foundation in 2002 helped develop the project.

Leoni and Hartzler (a physics instructor at Edmonds College at the time) led the project. The MAC project hosted six conferences attended by 122 faculty members at high school and higher education institutes primarily in Washington State. A second National Science Foundation grant awarded to Edmonds College in 2005 collaboration with the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges gave the project a nationwide reach.
