New scholarship opportunity for construction students

Lynnwood High School Tech Prep Construction scholarships of up to $7,000 are provided
by Rotary Club of Lynnwood to students to complete a Construction Industry Training
certificate or Construction Management degree. Lynnwood High School students who attended
the carpentry program in 2009-10 or 2008-09 and earned college credits in construction
via Edmonds Tech Prep will be given priority for the scholarships. For more information

Rotary Club of Lynnwood and the Lynnwood Rotary Community Foundation, which have supported Edmonds School District’s carpentry program for 35 years, will now provide scholarships to recent Lynnwood High School Tech Prep Construction students to attend Edmonds College and complete a Construction Industry Training certificate or Construction Management degree.
In the past, the rotary foundation has also purchased land for the high school carpentry program so that students can gain hands on, real world experience building an affordable, family home. The students work on the project throughout the year. High school carpentry students also have the opportunity, at no cost to them, to earn credit at Edmonds College to apply toward a Construction Industry Training certificate through the college’s TechPrep program.
"The Lynnwood Rotary Community Foundation has supported the house project because it one of the few programs to give vocational students a unique learning opportunity while in high school. The house project has kept many students in school because they found an interest in something they could do. Building houses has given them a way to be successful. This is good for students and the community,” said Lynnwood Rotary Community Foundation President Travis Snider.
After high school graduation however, it can be tough for students to find the funds to continue their education. With the new rotary scholarship, carpentry students will now be able to finish a degree or certificate, which leads to better paying, more stable jobs. Lynnwood Rotary will award up to $7,000 in construction scholarships each year for three years. This year, students who attended the carpentry program in 2009-10 or 2008-09 and earned college credits in construction via Edmonds Tech Prep will be given priority for the scholarships.

Edmonds College’s Construction Industry Training certificate teaches green building, blueprint reading, measuring, construction safety, foundation layout, and power and hand tool techniques. The certificate can be completed in a year or less in evening classes. It prepares students for entry-level work in construction and apprenticeships. Edmonds College’s Construction Management program, accredited by the American Council for Construction Education, prepares students, who have prior experience in construction, for professional careers in the industry. The program focuses on business and project management, estimating, inspection, and construction related computer applications. Students can choose to earn a Construction Project Management or Building Inspection Certificate or complete a two-year degree in Construction Management. Most classes are offered in the evenings.
