2011 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration features musician Derrick N. Ashong

Musician and activist Derrick N. Ashong will be the featured speaker Tues., Jan 18 at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration in Lynnwood.
Ashong speaks at Edmonds College 12:30 p.m., Tues., Jan 18 in the Black Box Theatre, 20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood and at Meadowdale High School, 7 p.m., Tues., Jan. 18 in the Great Hall 6002 168th St. SW, Lynnwood. Ashong is leader of the band Soulfège and host of "The Derrick Ashong Experience" on SIRIUS XM's Oprah Radio. The Harvard educated talent is known for expressing his thoughts on Senator Barack Obama (as seen in one of the most viewed videos of 2008 on YouTube) and in his lyrics (he won Billboard Magazine's 2007 World Song Writing Competition).
He inspires, engages, and activates young people with positive messages for social change.
For several years, the City of Lynnwood, Edmonds College, Central Washington University, and Edmonds School District have worked collaboratively to sponsor the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration to bring Lynnwood a positive celebration that encourages mutual understanding and respect for our growing and changing community. This year’s sponsors include the City of Lynnwood, Edmonds College, Edmonds School District, Central Washington University, Hampton Inn and Suites, and The Journal Media Group.
