Edmonds College's Horticulture Department offers some great classes taught by local experts this winter, including Interior Plants with Virginia Powers, Introduction to Nursery/Greenhouse with Dan Flax, Container Gardening with Karen Chapman, and Restorative Design Solutions with Peggy Gaynor.
Winter quarter runs Jan. 2-March 19.

Interior Plants, Horticulture 134 will be taught by Virginia Powers of tropicalplanttechnician.com. Powers is a successful business owner, author, and expert on interior plants. She'll provide sage counsel for home gardeners and budding professionals. Learn about tropical foliage plants used in the home, office, and commercial sites and how to care for an extend the life of the most popular. Field trips and hands-on learning in the greenhouse and lab are important parts of the course. Class meets 9-11:50 a.m., Mondays.
Introduction to Nursery/Greenhouse, Horticulture 196 will be taught by longtime nurseryman and horticulturist Dan Flax of Clearwater Gardens in Marysville. This is a wonderful primer course on propagating and growing a range of nursery and greenhouse plants including vegetable starts, flowering annuals, hanging baskets, and woody plants. Class meets 1-3:50 p.m., Fridays.
Container Gardening, Horticulture 227 will be taught by Karen Chapman of lejardinetdesigns.com. Chapman has a knack for combining innovation with extensive horticultural knowledge and artistry. Learn about choosing the correct container for different settings; appropriate soils, plants, and other decor; design and planting of containers; and container planting care and preservation. Class meets 9-11:50 a.m., Tuesdays.
Restorative Design Solutions, Horticulture 270 will be taught by landscape architect Peggy Gaynor of gaynorinc.com. Gaynor is an acknowledged leader in this segment of landscape architecture and design so critical to restoration projects. The course offers pragmatic and creative approaches to ecologically-based site design for a variety of disturbed urban landscapes. Students will complete site analysis, program development, conceptual designs, planting plans, and plant schedules for a real site. Class meets 1-4:20 p.m., Mondays.
