Edmonds College presents An Evening with “Between the Lines,” featuring student readings, music, and visual artwork along with a performance by renowned slam poet Chas Jackson, 7 p.m., Tues., April 23, in the Black Box Theatre on campus—20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood. Free and open to the public.

The event will start with readings and performances from Edmonds CC students. Some of the readings appear in the 2013 edition of Between the Lines, a student-edited literary journal. Between the Lines is published annually to showcase literature and artwork from students as well as local artists and writers in our community — An Evening with Between the Lines highlights these accomplishments.

A free copy of Between the Lines is available to students. The publication is available for $10 for the general public.

Jackson will perform his renowned slam poetry to cap the evening. He currently writes for the award-winning web series “The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl.” He was previously one of the breakout stars of the FX television show “Black. White.,” produced by Ice Cube. Performing his original poetry, he received high praise for his work on the show that later went on to win an Emmy award.

He has competed as a member of the 2006 Los Angeles Slam Team and 2008 Atlanta Slam Team. In 2009, as part of team San Francisco, he performed on the final stage at the national poetry slam, placing third out of the nation’s 68 teams.

Jackson says he believes that poetry is the only way you can touch someone’s heart without his or her permission.
