Edmonds CC offering free electronics recycling

Electronics recycling 2/26/2014

Instead of collecting and wondering what to do with that outdated electronic equipment, why not get rid of it?

Edmonds College will offer free electronics recycling to the public 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the college, 20000 68th Ave. W. Signs will be provided from the entrance at 68th Ave. W and 200th St. SW. Download the college’s parking lot map at www.edmonds.edu/parking.

The recycling event is sponsored by Edmonds CC and Lynnwood-based E-Waste, an electronics recycler.

Free to recycle will be computers, laptops, monitors, TVs, and cell phones. Other electronics — such as washers, dryers, VCRs, and printers — will be accepted for a small fee. Collected cell phones will be used to raise funds for a Susan G. Komen event to the help in the fight to end breast cancer.

Concerned about private information stored on hard drives? For $2, E-Waste will provide certificates that ensure the data will be destroyed.

Mercury, lead, cadmium, and other hazardous and toxic material can be found in electronic waste, and the Environmental Protection Agency reported in 2009 that more than 82 percent of used electronics went to landfills and incinerators.

The recycling is part of Edmonds CC's participation in RecycleMania, a nationwide competition aimed at reducing waste and increasing recycling on college campuses. Free electronics recycling for students and employees is Wednesday, March 12.
