Call for Presenters: Women in STEM to lead workshops for girls

12/05/18

Edmonds Community College is pleased to announce its Call for Presenters for the Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) 2019 Conference that encourages girls, grades 8-12, to explore careers in STEM, or science, technology, engineering, and math.

Girls learn to pippette at a STEM conference

Middle school and high school girls learn how to use a micropipette during a STEM workshop at the Expanding Your Horizons 2017 Conference at Edmonds Community College.

More than 450 girls from the Edmonds, Mukilteo, and Shoreline school districts and Anacortes and Burlington middle schools will attend this year’s conference from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, March 19. Edmonds CC is now in its seventh year of hosting EYH.

Edmonds CC is inviting women who are currently working in or majoring in (at a university level) a STEM field to design and lead a 35-minute, interactive workshop. The presenter will present their workshop three times during the conference.

“We’re looking for amazing women in STEM who want to inspire girls, to pursue anything from medicine and coding to gaming and engineering,” said Michelle Platt, Edmonds CC Outreach manager. “Please consider this opportunity to spark the imaginations of more than 450 local high school girls.”

Past workshops include:

  • A Safari into Genomes – What does a geneticist actually do? Learn what genes make you unique and how you could change the world as a geneticist. Presented by University of Washington, Women in Genome Sciences.
  • The Amazing Brain – The brain is the most complex organ in the body. It is the command center for every other organ and controls how we experience and interact with the world around us. Learn how the brain works and discover what happens when something goes wrong. Presented by Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute.
  • Data, Data, Everywhere! – Learn how data is impacting our lives and how you can develop a career using data. Bonus: Learn about working at Amazon. Presented by Amazon.

If you’re interested, email Platt at michelle.platt@edmonds.edu with your name, job title, and a brief description about what you do. The deadline to submit an inquiry is Tuesday, Jan. 15.
