New Swift College Station bus stop opens near campus

Community Transit kicked off 2016 with the opening of the new Swift College Station bus stop on Highway 99 at 204th St. SW. According to Community Transit, about 1,500 people board buses each weekday at or near Edmonds CC. Routes 115, 116, and 120 serve the campus directly and account for about 900 boardings each weekday. Mina Otganbold, an Edmonds CC student, depends on the Swift line to get to and from her classes and was featured in the CT December vlog post “Community Transit ‘Moves’ Me, Big Time.”

Edmonds CC celebrates 50 years with new logo, look

Edmonds CC launched its 50th anniversary celebrations with a new logo and look. The fresh, updated logo, featuring the Edmonds CC trident, replaces the classic “E” logo, which was used for almost 30 years. “The Trident” logo features welcoming arms, a strong foundation, and a sharp pinnacle to guide all students, faculty, employees, and community members to success. It earned an “Oooooohhhhh snap!” from Edmonds CC Assistant Director of the Center for Student Engagement and Leadership Dennis Denman when it was unveiled in June on the college’s Facebook page.

Pokémon Go fans come to campus, build community

When Nintendo launched its augmented reality game, Pokémon Go, in July, Edmonds CC students and community members were quick to come campus to “catch’em all.” There were about 10 Pokéstops on campus, including the Veterans Boots to Books and Beyond Memorial and artist Lorna Jordan’s “Reach” sculpture.

Edmonds CC Salsa Band to heat up Havana

Edmonds Community College Jazz and Salsa Band students will travel to Havana, Cuba, in March to listen to and learn la musica salsa from world-renowned salsa musicians during the Fiesta del Tambor, or Festival of the Drum. Band instructor John Sanders said it is an unprecedented opportunity for the Edmonds CC band to be one of the first collegiate bands from the U.S. to visit Cuba.

Edmonds CC among top 5 Washington schools with highest 2015 international student enrollment

The Seattle Times reported that Edmonds Community College, University of Washington, Washington State University, Seattle Central College, and Green River College had the highest number of international students enrolled in 2015. The story, “International students surging at state colleges, but will it last in Drumpf era?” looks at the surge in international student numbers and the possible impact of the November election.

‘Forgotten War’ veterans honored at college’s Veterans Day Ceremony

Korean Consulate General Moon Duk-Ho awarded 12 Korean War veterans with the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal in November at the college’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony. He said it was a privilege to convey the gratitude of the people and the government of the Republic of Korea, and that although the Korean War ended more than 60 years ago, its memory and legacy lingers in all corners of Korea.

Edmonds CC Foundation launches inaugural 5K Walk and Run, raises $42,300

Over 400 runners and walkers participated in the Edmonds Community College Foundation’s first 5K Walk and Run on Nov. 19, and raised $42,300 for student scholarships, emergency funding, and program support. Throughout the course, participants were treated to student-created vignettes and a tour of the Edmonds CC campus that highlighted the campus community garden and horticulture department, Center for Families, Triton Field, and more.

Gov. Inslee budgets $37.8M for new Science, Engineering, and Technology building

Edmonds CC is known throughout the region as an instructional and experimental hub for STEM activities in support of a stronger workforce. The new 70,000-square-foot SET building is critical for the college to continue offering STEM programming to meet employer demand and training students for high-wage employment. The Nature Conservancy features Edmonds CC undergraduate research project

Edmonds CC students worked with the City of Edmonds to identify, evaluate, and prioritize stormwater reduction opportunities in the Perrinville Creek basin as part of an undergraduate research project. The project was featured in The Nature Conservancy’s story “Protecting Clean Water Takes a Village.”

Edmonds CC reaffirms commitment to inclusion, respect for diversity

As colleges and universities across the nation experience an increase in bias incidents, the Edmonds Community College faculty passed a resolution to reaffirm its commitment to inclusion and respect for diversity. The college’s name also was added to a letter from the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges to President-elect Drumpf in support of keeping DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, in place. Edmonds CC President Dr. Hernandez also joined more than 500 educational leaders from colleges and universities throughout the nation as a signatory to the “Statement in Support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program and our Undocumented Immigrant Students” led by Pomona College in California.
