ELA Department Receives National Book Fund Grant
We are very excited to share some great news with you from the ELA department. A group of ELA faculty, led by Jackie Burgess and Jaehan Park, applied for and were awarded a National Book Fund grant of $2,363.52 from ProLiteracy!
The purpose of the grant is to award funds to organizations to purchase print materials from New Readers Press for students in literacy and basic education programs. Faculty in Levels 1 and 2 have provided input on the books to order with the funds. Several others including Rosa Woolsey, Kristin Quach, and Geoff McKeown, reviewed the application and gave feedback before final submission.
Our students need to build English fluency through reading which allows them to understand
the usage of words and become familiar with new vocabulary in context. Reading builds
grammar and writing skills as students are exposed to language patterns.
The books that we received include listening and speaking practice which builds listening
and speaking skills.
The books will support students in our Level 1 and Level 2 classes. A total of about
400 students take classes in these two levels each quarter.
Please join us in congratulating the participants in this grant for their dedication to successfully seeking additional resources for students in our division!
